The Design and Technology department at Charters School is committed to delivering a curriculum accessible to all which provides the broadest possible selection of opportunities for students. Using a range of materials from four main areas Graphics, Resistant materials, Textiles and Food in conjunction with drawing on additional knowledge from other STEM subjects We firmly believe that students learn best by ‘doing’ and by allowing students to experiment and take design risks, in a safe and positive learning environment.

Our main priority is for students to be problem solvers who are not afraid of making mistakes. The subject embeds high quality literacy skills through analysis and evaluation techniques. Through the curriculum, students are actively contributing to the creativity, culture, wealth and wellbeing of themselves.

This means:

  • They will learn about types, sources and properties of fibres and fabrics.
  • Via application, they will learn a range of processes used to manufacture textiles based products including decoration and construction.
  • They will apply investigation strategies to inform the development of their designs.
  • Innovative design strategies will be adopted to ensure their product is fit for purpose.
  • They will develop analytical and evaluative skills and be confident enough to self-reflect, which leads to further exploration of ideas.
