HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

Seeing the Dining Hall being used as an exhibition space for the Art department.  The Dining area has some of the highest footfall rates in the school.  Using the space to showcase some of the excellent artwork is great to see.  We currently have five display boards showing work from Year 7 and Year 8 students and we intend to install more boards to display more artwork.  It really does lift the environment in that area of the Dining Hall, and I hope gives some inspiration to students as they sit and eat and talk during their break.

During a learning walk this week I visited one of the Year 11 Textile and Food GCSE groups as they were preparing for their practical exams.  I was impressed to see the design flare in Textiles and the range of ideas that had come from their concepts.  In the Food, they were preparing their timesheets ready for the three course meal they have to prepare.  There was military precession with timings on show, the skill development in planning and working out timings was great to see.  I am sure it will lead to prefect meringues coming out at just the right time.

LATE TO SCHOOL

We are seeing an increasing number of students being late to school in the morning.  As a snap shot I thought I would share with you some numbers from my duty between 8.10 and 8.30 am on Wednesday this week.  They certainly give pause for thought.

8.10 to 8.15 am  15 cars passed me on the staff / bus drop off car park.
8.15 to 8.20 am  40 cars
8.20 to 8.30 am  160 cars stationary or moving very slowly.

122 had the driver plus one person in!

A total of 215 cars in 20 minutes and that is just those travelling from Devenish Road down Charters Road.

Students should be in school for 8.25 am ready for their registration period.  We appreciate that traffic is busy around the surrounding roads and as more people are returning to the work place this is adding to local congestion.

We will be recording late minutes for those students who are not in registration on time and collating these to build an understanding of individuals who are late and issue detentions accordingly.

If you are dropping off your children, please build into your travel time the congestion in the local area.  There are plenty of places within 500 metres of the school where they could be dropped off in good time to walk to school.  This has the added advantage of a little exercise and also cuts down on air pollution around the school, something which our Environmental group led by Sixth Form students have highlighted.  I am also concerned that our staff are having to get involved in driver disputes which is totally unacceptable.

In this same vein, we were very sad to receive a complaint from the owner of a property in the Charters residential development opposite our drop-off area.  A parent/carer, when asked to move their car because they were blocking the entrance to the property, responded with an unpleasant hand gesture.  We remind drivers that this area is private property and we do request our parents, carers and students be respectful to our neighbours at all times.

TOTE-LLY U

As part of the Year 12 Enrichment Curriculum a team of students are taking part in the Young Enterprise Company Programme and have set up their own company, Tote-lly U.  In the upcoming weeks, Young Enterprise have organised two trade fairs to provide students with an opportunity to sell their products to the public:

  • Saturday 5 February in Maidenhead; Nicholson Shopping Centre, SL6 1LB
  • Saturday 5 March in Windsor (details tbc).

The students have also been incredibly resourceful and arranged a pop-up stall at Longacre’s on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 February (weather permitting).

If you are in the Maidenhead area on Saturday, please can you pop through the trade fair as I am sure the students would appreciate the support, as well as seeing a friendly face. Please also pop by the stall if you’re in Longacre’s on 12/13 February
