CALENDARHOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY 27 JANUARY

Holocaust logo

Yesterday marked Holocaust Memorial Day, 77 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp and a regime that committed genocide. It is important that we all take time to reflect on the horrors that the day remembers not just the period of Nazi tyranny but on other genocides that have happened since.  Hate has no place and it is all our responsibilities to stand up to people who seek to promote hate and prejudice in all its forms.

HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK

We are seeing how vibrant our school Library is.  During the second break, there are regularly over 60 students reading, helping the librarian or playing games.  It is such a fantastic atmosphere and lovely to see students enjoying the space, which had been closed to them for too long.

We have been holding interviews this week in school for a wide variety of roles.  As part of the interview process, students are involved on panels and taking candidates on tours around the school.  These activities help our students develop transferable skills and develop confidence.  The students have been highly professional, the feedback from the candidates about them has been a pleasure to hear.  Thank you to all who have contributed.

During one of my learning walks this week I went into a Year 7 Science lesson where they were learning about electricity.  The student who I asked to explained what was being learnt, was able to talk through the electrical circuit using key vocabulary, which in itself was fantastic to hear but the reason why this interaction has made my highlights of the week is because the class gave the student a spontaneous round of applause.  A lovely example of kindness, as the student must have felt a mild panic with me asking them questions.

CHANGE TO END OF TERM ARRANGEMENTS EASTER

PLEASE NOTE There is a change to the end of term times and dates that were originally published.

The last day of the Spring Term will now be Thursday, 7 April 2022 at 3.00 pm.  Normal extra-curricular activities will run on that day.

8 April will become a training day for staff.  Students  DO NOT attend school on 8 April.

This is required due to a change in Management Information Systems in school and training needed.

This is due to having to upgrade the whole school Management Information System before the start of the summer, and as such it is preferable to use 8 April to train staff rather than the start of the Summer Term.

MASKS IN SCHOOL

The DfE guidance for schools is now that masks are no longer required in a school setting.  This does not mean an end to mask-wearing at all.  We have decided that given our present numbers in school, wearing masks is a personal choice; however, if we see infection rates increase, we will reintroduce masks to help with infection control.

The wearing of a face mask or face covering will remain compulsory for students travelling on any White Bus or Fernhill school bus, except for those who are exempt.

COVID-19 VACCINATION DAY AT SCHOOL 3 FEBRUARY

A reminder that the Immunisation Team will be coming back to run a second day of vaccinations for eligible students. A fresh consent form is needed for this visit.

Please see the information on our website and if your child is eligible and you would like them to be included in this day, complete the consent form on our website.

WATER BOTTLES

Students need to fill their water bottles up during break times.  Students who fill up at the end of breaks or during lesson changeover are arriving late to lessons.  These minutes add up and lead to lost learning.  Students who are late will have minutes recorded and a detention issued to make up the time.

Student Services cannot provide plastic or paper cups for students to use their sink to have a drink.  This area is not large enough or designed for students to go to for a cup of water.  As such, students will be turned away.

THANK YOU TO STAFF

Pearson Education run the National Teaching Awards each year.  They also run the Thank a Teacher programme.  If you wish to thank a member of Charters School, then this is an ideal way of dropping a card to them via e-mail.  It takes less than five minutes to complete, and I know it will positively impact the individuals who receive them.  If you wish to thank a teacher here at Charters or indeed at any school, follow the link here

EMAIL COMMUNICATION

I want to remind parents/carers that we will respond to communications within 3 school days unless it is urgent.  The nature of a school timetable means that staff are away from their emails for considerable parts of the day and may on occasions not have time because of teaching, running extra-curricular clubs and planning, to reply as quickly as they would like to.  Staff do endeavour to respond in a timely manner and within 3 school days

In addition, we do not expect staff to read or respond to emails over the weekend or during the holidays.  Our main school email account is monitored during these periods, and any urgent communication will be passed to the member of SLT on duty over the holiday periods.
