NEWSLETTER - 11 NOVEMBER

HIGHLIGHTS

Today we had the entire school  marking Remembrance Day by holding a short service on outside on the astro.  All this week Mr Espensen has presented assemblies to the different year groups, Year 7 will be on Monday.   As a school we recognised the sacrifice that individuals and families make when they serve in the armed forces.  In taking time to stop and pause to reflect on all who are impacted by armed conflict, we remember those who have lost loved ones.

I had the pleasure of observing a Year 10 Biology lesson early this week which was focussed on communicable disease.  It was fantastic to hear students relate the experience of Covid to the lesson as well as seeing the concepts brought to life through the idea of a simple experiment to highlight how disease can be passed on without us knowing.  Students were then able to differentiate between different types of disease and the impact that they can have.

Last half term 52% of students attended an extracurricular clubs in Year 7 to Year 11 and 77% Year 7 students attended a club.  These are wonderful figures to see as we encourage students to attend clubs as they add so much to their education beyond the classroom.  There are new clubs this term so we would encourage as many people as possible to attend a club.  There are occasions when clubs have to be cancelled in PE, this is regrettable but unavoidable sometimes.  We do try to give as much notice as possible.

We have the following trips coming up this half term already planned, there are other major trips due to the success for the sporting teams in school in particular the Cross Country Teams who are heading off to Taunton for the regional finals.

It is with great pleasure to announce more than 80 A Level Mathematics students successfully participated in this year's UK Mathematics Trust Senior Mathematics Challenge 2022.  The SMC is a 90-minute multiple choice paper consisting of questions that encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques in order to solve interesting problems. The top-scoring 66% of participants throughout the UK are awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates in the ratio of 3:2:1 and this year certificates will be awarded to all 80+ participants including 39 Bronze, 16 Silver and 4 Gold.  "Best in Year" went to Gracie (Y12) and "Best in School" to Harry (Y13).  All students who were awarded Gold (including, Harry, Lauren, Rupert and John) are amongst approximately 6000 UK students who have been invited to participate the follow-up round, the Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo (SK), which takes place on Wednesday 16 November.  These are fantastic results which show the great strength of our A Level Mathematicians. We would like to congratulate all who participated, and wish our SK participants the very best of luck next week!
