News round up (4)

The Student Council met this week to discuss issues around attendance.  The Head Students facilitated the meeting very successfully indeed and as a result, we have had some very insightful ideas about school attendance.  To be clear it wasn’t just the students in the room initiating ideas; the Representatives from each year group had previously met Tutor Group Reps who were able to feedback the thoughts and feelings of their peers.   They have certainly highlighted some ideas that we will consider in school about how to move the attendance debate forward.

Thank you to Mrs Cook who has organised and supported the students in the SATRO Problem Solving  Challenge.  The team is now through the regional final which we take place on March.

Year 9 and Year 12 students have been involved in Drama workshops this week with Year 8 students going to London on Thursday evening to see Shrek the Musical.  A week that highlights the importance of the Arts in a broad education for all.

Excellence, Curiosity and Confidence have been the focus for this week assemblies which looked ahead to Science Week.  Next week we look at Curiosity.  With World Book Day approaching on 7 March, we want to spark that interest in reading which will catapult our students curiosity to a new level.  Expansive reading not only assists academically, but can fuel imagination and develop lifelong interests in all manner of subjects.

VAPES

The Metropolitan Police have reported that on 29 January 2024 five young people aged 14-16 years who were hospitalised with relatively serious health harms having used vapes which toxicology results have confirmed to contain Spice. They have also reported 2 young people who also experienced health harms an additional having used vapes containing cannabis.  At present they do not know how wide the issue of vapes containing illegal drugs is, and whether the young people involved planned to buy illegal drugs.

Thames Valley Police are also extremely concerned by this information and have asked all schools to share.

In the latest incident, the vape was a blue and purple coloured rechargeable metal vape device labelled ‘Vaporesso’, which held blue liquid residues within a clear plastic chamber of a silver and black cartridge.

TEXT SLANG

We recently wrote to all parents asking for help in monitoring what your children might be doing online with social media.  A recent article in the Times Educational Supplement link HERE contained very useful information around the slang being used to convey messages as well as emojis.

This may help with some context if you read or see such phrases / emojis in your child's communications.

WORLD BOOK DAY

Wbd

As World Book Day approaches, students will be receiving World Book Day tokens from tutors this week, to use when the books come out during half term on 15 February.

Students may want to use them on WBD books, or as a discount voucher on another book, perhaps to help with revision or wider reading around study subjects.  Sixth form students are not automatically given tokens but are more than welcome to come and request them in the Library, where the Librarian will be more than happy to provide them.

Details of this year's design competition can be found here: https://www.worldbookday.com/competition/design-a-nbt/ - winners receive tokens for themselves, for other students in their class and for the school.  This is open to students up to 16 years and again, half term might provide an opportunity for those interested to start on their designs.
