News round up (4)

We heard the wonderful news this week that a student in Year 11 has been selected for the GB TeamGym Team that will be competing in the European Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.  A great deal of hard work has gone into being selected and lots is still left to do in the training building up to the event.  I am sure you will join me in wishing Jess all the best in her training and in the competition itself.

The second group of Year 7 students have been away this week on their outward-bound week down in Dorset.  Once again they had a wonderful time getting cold and wet and also fishing for mackerel in the sea off a boat.

There have been two trips to the theatre this week, one directly linked to the GCSE syllabus watching Jekyll and Hyde and the second an enrichment trip run by the Drama department to see Come From Away, a production about the 7,000 air passages that ended up in a small town in Newfoundland, Canada when all flights were grounded after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre in 2001.

Finally it was wonderful to see two of our Sixth Form Students take part in The Ceremony of Beating Retreat at Edinburgh Castle recently. To have been asked to take part is a tremendous honour.

Coasteering in Dorset

NEWSFLASH (1)Last Saturday Sixth Form students Hannah & Kirsten, along with musicians from the Army Cadet Force, took part in a traditional Beating Retreat on behalf of Army Cadet Charitable Trust Scotland, on the esplanade in front of Edinburgh Castle,

Beating Retreat is a centuries old military tradition which dates back to to the days when it was initiated at sunset, by the firing of a single round from the evening gun, to signify the end of a day of combat.  The ceremony has since evolved into a colourful pageant of military music and precision drill. Hannah & Kirsten were two of over 170 cadets that took part.

NEWSFLASH (2)We would like to congratulate two students who recently performed exceptionally well in their music grades.

Sam in 8E passed Grade 1 piano and Elizabeth in 8I passed Grade 3 ukulele, and both students were awarded a merit. Very well done.

NEWSFLASH (4)We are delighted to report that Fabien in 7A has been chosen as the runner-up for the 11 -12 year category in this year's Royal Ascot Schools Art Competition. Fabien's beautiful artwork will be reproduced and displayed within the public tunnel which links Ascot High Street with the racecourse.  He will receive a £25 Amazon gift card for himself and he and his parents will be invited to an awards ceremony at the race weekend on 11th May, followed by a celebratory tea.

THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE FUNDRAISING THERMOMETER

Thank you for the amazing support of parents, carers and staff who donated funds towards our Unity Day mufti on Monday. The day raised a huge £2180.66 for our Unity Fund and will be added to the amount we have already raised for the Charters Three Peaks Challenge.

The fundraising thermometer now stands at a whopping £4646 and this is only due to the fantastic support we have received from parents, carers, staff and the local businesses who have kindly sponsored the team.

THERMOMETER (11)

The team will set off in nine weeks and hope to scale the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales in under 24 hours. They are putting themselves through the challenge in order to raise £10,000 for our Unity Fund which aims to support students whose families may be experiencing financial difficulties.

The items include mainly fresh food and bakery items donated from local supermarkets. The food is at the end of its shelf life (but still perfectly fine to eat!) and would otherwise just go to waste. Bring a bag to fill up, stop for a chat and a cup of tea (and cake!!) and warm up in the church. ALL welcome, no voucher/referral required.

Hope Church, Sunningdale, The Hope Centre, High Street Sunningdale, (next to Nag’s Head).
