Powerful Workshops Tackle Misogyny

This week, Charters School is continuing its important work to challenge misogynistic content and harmful stereotypes that many young people encounter through social media. As part of our ongoing commitment to promoting Unity, Respect and Excellence, students in Years 10 and 12 have taken part in thought-provoking workshops led by educator and author Peter Radford from Beyond This.

Peter Radford, who works extensively with schools on character education, leadership and equality, guided students through honest and open discussions about how gender stereotypes and online influences can shape attitudes and behaviour. The sessions encouraged students to think critically about the messages they see online and to consider how to respond with integrity and empathy.

For Year 12, the workshop took place in small discussion groups of five or six students around tables. These smaller groups created a space for meaningful conversation, allowing students to explore issues such as sexism, misogyny and positive masculinity. The aim was to help them reflect on the kind of values and relationships they want to build as they move into adulthood.

Year 10 students took part in separate workshops for boys and girls, ensuring that everyone could engage openly and comfortably with the material. Across both sessions, the focus remained on respect, equality, and the importance of making responsible choices online and in everyday life. Students discussed the role of social media algorithms and online influencers, examining how these can amplify harmful messages - but also how young people can be part of a positive change.

These workshops are a powerful tool in helping students to make the right choices in life, and they are an important expression of our school’s character pillars which underpin Unity, Respect and Excellence. By providing safe spaces for conversation and reflection, Charters School is empowering its students to stand up against prejudice and build a more respectful, inclusive community - both within school and beyond.
