For the past six months there has been a focus on attendance at Charters, outlining the importance of regularly coming to school and showcasing how making improvements can have an impact on students.  The campaign was designed to highlight areas that could encourage students to improve their attendance at school and all the benefits that this would reap.

The campaign kicked off with an introduction as to why good attendance is so impactful, showing the link between attendance and academic success.  It went on to highlight the social, emotional and developmental benefits associated with regularly attending school such as improved confidence, better relationships with teachers and peers, and generally increased engagement with school and extra-curricular activities.

Barriers that prevent young people from attending school were identified, which included those relating to mental health, transportation and being a young carer. Our community was encouraged to start a conversation with us so that together we could find the solution.  We have many support systems at Charters School for students who face difficulties along with resources and programmes available to help improve attendance.

Parents play a vital role in encouraging attendance.  We showcased some of our staff parents who shared their tips on how to make attending school a regular positive experience for their children.

By talking to students, we discovered that regular attendance strengthens friendships, helps build emotional resilience and those who attend school consistently are more likely to be engaged, confident and happy.   We've had success stories in all key stages, including one where a student used their own newly-found strategies for improving their attendance, to support and encourage their peers.

Overall attendance is higher than last year and we are seeing cohorts improving their attendance, as each year group comes through the school.

Thank you to our whole school community for continuing to make attendance a priority.  That  saying is true; the more you put in, the more you get out.
