HIGHLIGHTS

Some of our students took part in the Mock COP 2023 event run by Wellington College and Holme Grange School.  Members of the School Eco Society represented the school in the debates taking on the role of Egypt.  Well done to Amy, Juliette and Elena in Year 13 for taking part and to Mr Metson for his support of the event.  One of the event organisers, who is an advisor to the Mexican government on Climate Change, commented on how impressed she was with our team.  The next event will be taking place in December at the same time as COP 28 Dubai.  Sadly the students will not be going to Dubai but to Holme Grange School in Wokingham!

Leadership week has been wonderful to see again.  Students in Year 9 have developed leadership skills through four days of timetabled events within eight subjects and then put these skills into practice in the classroom today by leading sessions for groups of younger students. It is always interesting to see young people's confidence grows and their ability to support each other.  Thank you to Mrs Hartwell and the departments involved for all the planning that went into the events. You can read more on the Leadership Week via our News section below.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Parents must try to understand what their children are doing online and how they are communicating.  We have had to deal with several incidents that have been related to comments made on social media, and images shared between students. The one aspect that these incidents have in common is that the posts all happen outside of school but end up impacting life in school as this is where the young people come together.  As hard as it is, it is important to regularly check what your son/daughter is saying, watching and speaking to online.

BIOLOGY CHALLENGE

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the British Biology Olympiad Challenge last month, but especially to Nathan in Year 10, and Year 9 students Sophie and Kristofers who all achieved Gold Awards for scoring in the top 5% nationally.

A special mention also for all the Silver Award winners - Lewis, Ted, Smilte, Miranda and Atia from Year 10 and Anna-Nicole, Paige and George from Year 9. Well done to you all.

NOTICES

OMEGLE

Lots of you may be aware of an online platform Omegle. It is a free online chat website that allows users to socialise with others without the need to register. The service randomly pairs users in one-on-one chat sessions where they chat anonymously using the names "You" and "Stranger". As you can imagine this comes with lots of risks and the poster below will hopefully help give you more information so that you can have informed conversations with your children and monitor their usage.

As always if you have any concerns about your child's use of social media don't hesitate to contact their Head of Year or Tutor.

BLOUSES

As the warmer weather is upon us, some of our students are telling us they are reluctant to remove school jumpers (even when they are hot) as they feel their blouses are see through.

We would like to remind you that as of September 2022 there is no requirement for those wearing a revere collar blouse to wear a branded item.  Revere collar blouses can be purchased in many supermarkets and also at other suppliers, some of which are listed below.  This hopefully gives more freedom to choose a quality and fit that suits your child.  All students can also choose to wear a branded polo shirt of which there are standard and premium on the school shop website which can be found here.

For those of you preparing for next year it is also worth noting that we will be running a Good Quality Second Hand Uniform Stall at our Charters Summer Festival on the Saturday 15 July.

A list of suggested retailers and items can be found here.

FOOD BANK - EVERY TUESDAY

Food
12:00-1:00PM
SHARE Hope Church, Sunningdale
High Street, Sunningdale, SL5 7LY (next to Nag’s Head Pub)

Hate food waste? Come along to Hope Church Sunningdale FOOD BANK, open to ANYONE. We have mainly fresh food and bakery items donated from local supermarkets. The food is at the end of its shelf life (but still perfectly fine to eat!) It would otherwise just go to waste. Bring a bag to fill up, stop for a chat and a cup of tea (and cake!!) and warm up in the church. ALL welcome, no voucher/referral required.

We operate a  one (standard size) shopping bag per family policy and use ticketing system to stagger entrance to the food bank. We ask that you enter through the side door. Tea/coffee/biscuits are available from 11:15 and during the food bank. Entrance tickets will be distributed just before the food bank opens at 12:00. We may need to limit some items so there is enough to share with everyone.
