NEWSLETTER - 21 OCTOBER

HIGHLIGHTS

One of our Year 13 students used the lifesaving skills learnt as part of his Duke of Edinburgh award to give a man who collapsed in the road CPR.  The paramedic who arrived on scene 7 minutes later said that Harry’s intervention saved the man's life.    Harry’s ability to think clearly under pressure and take control of the situation shows how important it is to take opportunities to learn this life saving skills.

It was wonderful to see treats being handed out to the 150 students whose names had been randomly selected from those students who, over the course of this half-term, had achieved at least one two-week block of 100% attendance.

I also had the pleasure of attending the school's Chamber Concert for this half-term.  It was great to see the talent on show across a number of different instruments.  What was striking to me was the sheer joy, determination and resilience of the performers.  Developing performance skills and the courage to perform is very important and these concerts really help with that. I would like to thank the Music Department for organising the concert and Ben in Year 11 for doing all the ‘tech’.

DRUG DOGS

Last week we had the search dogs in school as part of our random drugs search procedures.  The dogs where in school for five hours and worked across the school to help us keep the school site safe.  I am pleased to report that there were no indications of drugs on people in school, nor that any area of the school were being use for drugs.

FRENCH TRIP

This weekend, the French Department have taken Year 8 students to Calais to experience French culture and food.  Tomorrow morning they have a challenge in a French food market to find and purchase certain items that they will then use to create their packed lunch.  They will then visit Chocolat de Beussent to discover how chocolate is made!

TRIPS AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR THIS HALF-TERM

We believe that extra-curricular trips to help develop individuals' experiences of the world as well as supporting the curriculum are vitally important.  So far this school year the following trips have happened, including two residentials.  Thank you to all the staff who organise these trips and support them.  For many of them, this means giving up their own family time to facilitate the trips.

BOOK CLUB

Our first 'Staff and Sixth Form Book Club' meeting was a massive success. Lots of interesting and insightful discussions about 'Exit West' by Mohsin Hamid were had. The book was given an overall rating of 3.4 out of 5. A big thank you to Libby and Eva who helped to run the session and all of our amazing attendees. All of the attendees nominated a recommendation for our next book, and one recommendation was picked out of a hat... If you would like to read along with staff and students, the book we are reading for our next meeting is:

NOTICES

WHEN A STUDENT IS UNWELL

Students are reminded that they should NOT be using their mobiles during the school day. If they are unwell, they should go to Student Services/Medical Room first in order to be assessed. Parents/carers will be then contacted individually if the student requires further medication, permission to go home or any additional investigations.

Students will not be allowed to go home if they have contacted parents/carers themselves.

MONDAY 7 NOVEMBER: PARENT SUPPORT SESSION 6 PM

On Monday 7 November, we will be holding a Parent Support session on How to support your child with organisation, workload and revision at KS4. The sessions will be a 20-30 minute presentation at 6 pm on Zoom. Please register your interest using this Form to receive a Zoom link. Please note, there are a limited number of spaces and these will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

When we return after the half-term break our thoughts will turn to Remembrance Day, which takes place annually on 11 November. This day is an opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms, and our students will hear about this in greater detail throughout the week in assemblies led by our Head of History, Mr Espensen. On Friday 11 November, our staff and 1,730 students will come together to take part in our Remembrance Service, where we will share a moment of quiet reflection.

Throughout the week, there will be an opportunity for students and staff to purchase poppies to show their support for the Royal British Legion’s fundraising efforts. Students with small donations will be able to purchase a poppy from Student Services, and if you would like your child to participate please remember to send them to school with 50p or £1.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

There are lots of online Careers events taking place in the coming weeks which may interest students and parents/carers alike. Take a look at the Upcoming Opportunities page on our website for information regarding the various events and use the links to register your interest.

NAME THAT COAT

If you have not already named your child’s uniform, including their “big coat”, please do so over the half term holidays. If an item is named and handed into lost property, we can email you and your child to let you know.

This is the time of year when we receive piles of unnamed coats handed in to lost property which remain unclaimed. By the end of the year, local charity shops do very well out of us.

Whether you write on the label, sew on labels or use iron on labels please name your child’s coat.
