Powerful learning happens when students can put theory into practice. Our annual Year 12 Biology Field Course is a fantastic example of how learning beyond the classroom develops confidence, deepens understanding and prepares students for future success.

As part of our Outstanding Sixth Form, as recognised by Ofsted, Biology students spend five days at the Field Studies Council's Slapton Ley Field Centre in Devon, working alongside expert ecology tutors and our exceptional Biology teaching team.

The residential field course provides students with invaluable hands-on experience, allowing them to develop essential practical skills that simply cannot be replicated in the classroom. From carrying out ecological sampling techniques and using specialist scientific equipment to collecting, analysing and interpreting real-world data, students gain first-hand experience of biology in action.

Fieldwork takes students to a variety of fascinating habitats, including beaches, rocky shores, freshwater streams and woodland, where they investigate ecosystems, biodiversity and sustainability. The trip also includes a visit to Paignton Zoo, where students explore animal behaviour through expert-led sessions, further enriching their understanding of the A-level curriculum.

The course is an integral part of our Biology programme, reinforcing key topics while developing advanced practical, statistical and analytical skills that are essential for success in A-level examinations. Just as importantly, students build independence, resilience and teamwork - qualities that are highly valued by universities and employers alike.

The Biology Field Course is one of the many opportunities that sets Charters apart. It enhances students' UCAS applications, supports university interviews and demonstrates our commitment to providing meaningful, real-world learning experiences.

Through exceptional teaching and inspiring enrichment opportunities, our Outstanding Sixth Form ensures students leave Charters with not only outstanding academic knowledge but also the confidence and practical experience to thrive in higher education and beyond.
