Literature Trip to Tate Britain

Last week, our Sixth Form students embarked on an inspiring visit to Tate Britain—an experience that brought their classroom learning vividly to life and exemplified the spirit of curiosity and intellectual independence we value so highly at Charters Sixth Form.

The trip, organised for our Year 12 English Literature students, was designed to deepen their understanding of the poetry of Christina Rossetti through direct engagement with the artistic and cultural context of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Walking through the galleries, students encountered works that resonate with the themes, imagery and ideas they have been exploring in lessons, allowing them to forge meaningful links between literature and art. These moments—where subjects intersect and ideas spark across disciplines—are at the heart of a truly enriching Sixth Form education.

Beyond supporting examination study, opportunities like this encourage students to look outward: to read more widely, to question more deeply, and to engage in supercurricular learning that extends far beyond the specification. Whether sketching notes beside a painting, discussing symbolism in small groups, or simply absorbing the atmosphere of such an iconic cultural space, our students demonstrated maturity, enthusiasm and a genuine appetite for learning.

This visit is just one example of how we nurture independent thinking at Charters Sixth Form. We believe education should not be confined to the classroom, and we are proud to offer experiences that challenge students to make connections, think critically and develop their own informed perspectives.

Of course, no Charters trip would be complete without a very special guest. Our much-loved school mascot, Waddleton, joined the group for the day—and judging by the photos, he may have been the most enthusiastic visitor of all! From admiring masterpieces to accompanying students on their explorations, Waddleton’s presence added an extra sense of fun and community to an already memorable experience.

Charters Sixth Form was rated Outstanding in our most recent Ofsted inspection, and this thriving, dynamic corner of our school continues to reflect that standard. We are incredibly proud of our students - not only for their academic achievements, but for their curiosity, engagement and willingness to embrace opportunities like this one.

The Tate Britain trip stands as a wonderful reminder that education is at its most powerful when it is active, connected and inspired - and we look forward to many more experiences that bring learning to life in this way.
