Year 8 Students Excel in Their FPQ Presentations
This week marks an exciting milestone for our Year 8 students as they present their work for the Foundation Project Qualification (FPQ). It has been truly inspiring to see the culmination of their independent learning come to life.
The FPQ is designed to stretch and challenge students, encouraging them to explore a topic of personal interest in real depth. Throughout the process, students conduct their own research, develop their ideas, and produce a written report.

What has stood out most this year is the remarkable maturity shown by our students. From the impressive breadth of topic choices to the quality of research and the confidence demonstrated in their presentations, our Year 8 participants have exceeded expectations. Their ability to think critically, manage their time effectively, and communicate their findings clearly is something we are incredibly proud of.
To achieve the qualification, students complete several key components: a production log documenting their progress, a collection of research sources and a bibliography, a 1000-word essay addressing their chosen hypothesis, and a final presentation reflecting on their project outcomes. Each stage builds valuable skills, from independent research and organisation to evaluation and public speaking.

One of the most exciting aspects of the FPQ is the freedom it offers. Students can draw inspiration from topics studied in class or pursue entirely new interests, making each project unique and personally meaningful. Throughout the journey, project supervisors provide guidance and support, helping students navigate challenges and refine their ideas.
Miss Horn, who has led the FPQ project this year with Mrs Phipps said, "The students have worked incredibly hard over the past 6 months. They have shown dedication and astute critical thinking skills. Their confidence in presenting their findings and conclusions have blown me away. I am incredibly proud of them all."
The FPQ not only enriches students’ current learning but also prepares them for future academic challenges, including the Higher Project Qualification (HPQ) and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).
You can discover more about these qualifications here.
As presentations continue this week, we celebrate not just the finished projects, but the resilience, creativity, and intellectual curiosity our Year 8 students have shown throughout the process. Their achievements are a testament to their hard work, and a glimpse of the exciting potential ahead.
