Autism Awareness Month

April marks Autism Awareness Month, and at Charters School this has been an important opportunity to reflect on how we can create a more inclusive and understanding community for everyone.

Throughout the month, assemblies have been delivered to all year groups by Mrs Dean, who leads our Learning Support Centre. These sessions encouraged students to think about the many ways in which we are all different — and why those differences should be valued and celebrated.

Students explored the idea that some differences are visible, such as height or hair colour, while others are less obvious, like personal preferences, interests, or how we experience the world around us. Whether it’s something as simple as choosing salt and vinegar crisps over cheese and onion, or supporting a different football team, these differences are what make each of us unique.

A key message from the assemblies was clear: there is no such thing as “normal.” We are all either neurotypical or neurodivergent, and every individual brings their own strengths and challenges. Students were reminded that everyone is good at something — even if they haven’t discovered it just yet — and that these qualities are what help us stand out from the crowd.

The importance of language was also highlighted, with thoughtful discussions about how the words we choose can have a real impact on others. By being mindful and respectful in how we speak, we can help ensure that everyone feels safe, valued, and included at school.

To deepen understanding, students were also encouraged to engage with a short film exploring neurodiversity, helping to build empathy and awareness of the experiences of others.

At Charters, our commitment to inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. Our eight Inclusion Promises guide how we treat one another, and by following them — and simply looking out for our friends — we can continue to build a school environment that is happy, supportive, and welcoming for all.
