Last week saw Mrs Phipps accompany another outstanding group of Year 9 students as they once again stepped into the world of law and justice to take part in the prestigious Magistrates’ Mock Trial Competition, held at Reading Crown Court. Building on last year’s success, the event continued to offer a rich and inspiring opportunity for students to experience the realities of the legal system first-hand, taking on the roles of legal professionals within the setting of a real courtroom.

Over many months of preparation, the students devoted countless hours to developing a deep understanding of their individual roles within the trial process. Working both independently and collaboratively, they carefully researched legal procedures, examined evidence in detail, and crafted well-structured arguments for both the prosecution and defence. Rehearsals were thorough and purposeful, enabling each student - whether acting as a lawyer, witness, magistrate, defendant, legal advisor or usher - to think clearly, respond thoughtfully, and present information in a logical and systematic way to build a coherent and compelling case.

On the day of the competition, the team demonstrated remarkable composure, maturity and professionalism. Their ability to analyse information, adapt under pressure, and communicate their arguments with clarity was particularly impressive. The students showed great confidence in the courtroom, delivering persuasive speeches and conducting skilful cross-examinations, all while working seamlessly as a team.

Although the team will not be progressing to the next round this year, they performed incredibly well and should be immensely proud of their achievements. Their dedication, resilience and commitment to the process were evident throughout, and they represented the school with distinction at every stage.

We are extremely proud of all the students involved, not only for their performance on the day but for the hard work shown over many months of preparation. Our sincere thanks also go to Mrs Phipps for the many hours she has spent guiding and supporting the students, ensuring they developed both their understanding and confidence to such a high standard.
