Powerful Anti-Vaping Performance “Hooked”
Year 8 students were captivated this week by Hooked, a powerful 30-minute theatre performance exploring the realities of vaping and nicotine addiction. Delivered by three talented actors, the production used relatable scenarios to challenge the myth that vaping is harmless and highlight the pressures young people can face.
What made Hooked especially impactful was its relevance. The storyline reflected real-life situations many students may encounter, from peer pressure to the subtle ways vaping is normalised in youth culture. By the end of the performance, there was a noticeable shift in the room — students were not only engaged, but visibly reflective.

The performance was followed by an interactive 25-minute workshop, where students explored why nicotine is so addictive — with research from Imperial College London ranking it as the third most addictive substance after heroin and cocaine. They also examined how vapes are often marketed to resemble sweets, making them especially appealing to young people.
Importantly, students were given practical strategies to confidently respond if offered vapes or cigarettes, helping them navigate peer pressure in real-life situations.
Part of a wider public health initiative, Hooked aims to prevent vaping uptake and support young people in making informed choices. Many students found the session both engaging and eye-opening.
Our thanks go to Performance in Education for delivering such an impactful experience. Students will revisit the topic in future PDL lessons later this year.
Students can find support to help them quit vaping and smoking by texting a school nurse for confidential advice and support:
