Year 10 Inspired to Shape Their Future

There was a real buzz of anticipation in the hall this morning as Year 10 students gathered for an inspiring Careers Assembly led by our Careers Lead, Mrs Hicks. With the next stage of their journeys fast approaching, students were encouraged to pause, reflect, and begin thinking more deeply about who they are, what truly interests them, and the impact they would like to make on the world over the next ten years.

Mrs Hicks opened the session with a powerful message: careers are not simply about choosing a job — they are about understanding yourself. Students were invited to consider their strengths, values and motivations, and to think carefully about the kind of difference they want to make in the world around them.

A short film provided further guidance, helping students explore three broad areas of interest. Are they drawn to working with people — helping, caring, teaching, or persuading? Does working with information appeal — writing, calculating, typing, or interpreting data? Or are they more interested in physical things — equipment, machines, or hands-on problem-solving?

By thinking in these three categories, students were shown how they can begin to narrow down the types of work that may suit them best. From there, meaningful research can begin — exploring courses, qualifications and future pathways with greater clarity and confidence.

This reflection links perfectly with the upcoming Careers and Communications Expo ’26 which takes place on Wednesday 4th March. Students across the school have now received a full list of exhibitors and have been encouraged to plan their time carefully. As Mrs Hicks reminded them, “These 30 minutes could change your life.”

The Expo offers students the chance to:

  • Network with employers, colleges and universities
  • Explore opportunities
  • Research careers
  • Ask questions
  • Access lots of information in one place
  • Find out about transition and application procedures
  • Confirm their choices
  • Practise valuable communication skills

It promises to be an exciting and empowering event — one that places students firmly in the driving seat of their futures.

This morning’s assembly was more than just a talk; it was a call to action. Year 10 now have the tools, the encouragement, and the opportunity to start shaping the next chapter of their lives with confidence and purpose. The future is theirs to explore.
