Charters Sixth Form has a strong history of supporting students who aspire to become doctors, and this week a group attended a lecture which focused on medical ethics. Uma was one of the students who attended and you can read her article below:

Earlier last week, we were lucky enough to receive the opportunity for aspiring doctors to attend a webinar on the field of ethics in medicine. These ethics were defined as ‘the principles by which a doctor conducts themselves, governed by the situation, society and the time.’

Ethics are incredibly important to follow as a doctor, so having the opportunity to learn about them as early on as possible gave us an insightful view on what being a doctor would be like.

We learnt about BANJ – the 4 medical ethical pillars. Benevolence (going out of your way to do good), Autonomy (respecting patient choices), Non – Maleficence (do no harm), and Justice (every patient is entitled to the same care). We went through scenarios that could occur in the medical world, and debated how each of these pillars could be used to reach a decision in a situation. This helped humanise situations, as we had to consider the effect on patients and their families, which helped us understand that medicine is not just about the science, but also that you will be treating real patients, with real lives.

Some of these scenarios were in a surgical setting, where life or death decisions would have to made within seconds, and ethics absolutely must be considered in these high-pressure situations too. This understanding helped us realise that bedside manner and difficult decision making is a huge part of being a doctor, and that if you’re not prepared for that, then medicine may not be a profession for you.

But this webinar has taught us all this early on, so that we are all well equipped to make decisions on our futures. It was a great opportunity and an educational insight into the reality of the being a doctor.
