Music and Academic Success Go Hand in Hand at Charters

At Charters School, we know that education is about more than just grades — it’s about developing the whole person. That’s why our thriving Music Department is such a key part of school life.
Research has consistently shown that learning a musical instrument supports academic success. It builds perseverance, resilience, teamwork, and independence — skills that extend far beyond the concert hall. At Charters, this is clear to see: three out of the four students who have secured offers to study at Oxbridge this year all achieved Grade 8 on their instruments and were heavily involved in our Music Department.
Some parents worry that music lessons might distract from academic studies, but the evidence shows the opposite: playing an instrument can enhance performance across the curriculum.

Mr Hoare, Head of Music, explains, “Students who are involved in making music do better overall. I would encourage all students to learn an instrument, particularly an orchestral instrument, which gives them opportunities to participate in our school ensembles.”
Whether your child is just beginning their journey with us in Year 7 or is looking ahead to their next steps after GCSEs, music can play a powerful role in helping them thrive both academically and personally.
For students considering their post-16 options, our outstanding Sixth Form offers a supportive and inspiring environment where passions are nurtured alongside academic ambition. Those beginning their KS5 journey in September 2026 are warmly invited to our Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday 16th October from 5–8pm, where you can meet subject specialists and current students.
A presentation by our Headteacher, Mr Fletcher, and our Head of Sixth Form, Mrs Hill, will take place at 5.30pm and again at 6.30pm. If you wish to attend one of these presentations, please register your interest using the link below.
All subjects areas are available to visit throughout the evening without booking.
