Budding Horticulturist Helps School Garden Bloom

A once-forgotten corner of Charters School is being lovingly transformed into a vibrant and thriving community garden, thanks to the dedication of the Sowers & Growers group - and one particularly passionate student.
Year 10 student Louis has become a driving force behind the garden's success this academic year, playing a key role in cultivating both crops and community spirit. Under the guidance of Mr Watts, the garden is now bursting with life; from biodiversity-boosting plants, to fresh produce including tomatoes, cucumbers, chillies, cauliflower, potatoes, carrots, and strawberries. And according to those who’ve had a taste, the crops are already a hit with students and staff alike!
Louis’s green-fingered enthusiasm doesn’t stop at school. Inspired by his time in the garden, he has taken on a weekend job at the River Thames Mini Golf in Staines-upon-Thames, secured a summer role working with a local gardener, and even transformed his own garden at home - complete with home-grown dahlias and flourishing greenhouses.
"What I like about gardening is that getting out in nature more really improves your mental health," Louis shared. It’s a sentiment many would echo, especially in today’s fast-paced world.
He has also been nurturing tomatoes and cucumbers from seed at home and hopes to teach other students how to germinate crops next year, ensuring that his passion continues to inspire others.
We’re excited to see what’s next for Louis and the Sowers & Growers team. If this year’s garden is anything to go by, we’ve only just scratched the surface. From fresh produce to floral flair, this tranquil area of our school site is blooming in more ways than one - and it’s students like Louis who are helping it grow.
