At Charters School, we take immense pride in offering a rich tapestry of extra-curricular and supercurricular opportunities that ignite curiosity and bring learning vividly to life. A shining example of this came recently, when our Year 9 English students stepped beyond the classroom to experience a powerful open-air theatre production of Noughts & Crosses, Malorie Blackman’s acclaimed novel.

Performed under the open sky, the adaptation brought a new dimension to the students’ study of this poignant modern classic. Noughts & Crosses - a moving tale of forbidden love, social injustice, and identity - echoes Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, making it the perfect culmination to their class reader topic. The drama, the atmosphere, and the powerful performances left a lasting impression.

Arabelle, one of the students who attended, shared her excitement:
“The Noughts and Crosses trip was amazing! The play was great and very well planned, lighting was stunning. We had a beautiful view of the stage and could see everything clearly. Big shout out to Miss Mair, Miss Horn, and the English department! Big thank you for organising this and making it the best experience.”

Her classmate Jessica echoed the sentiment:
“The Noughts and Crosses theatre trip was incredibly fun and a special way to end the class reader topic. The play itself was extremely entertaining and interesting! It was well organised by the English department with no issues or delays. It was an amazing experience, and I am so glad I got the chance to go. Miss Mair, our group leader, was very organised in making sure everyone was okay and enjoying themselves! Overall, it was an awesome experience that I hope they will continue to do for the future year groups to come.”

Trips like these are at the heart of Charters School’s ethos, extending learning beyond the classroom, enriching students’ perspectives, and deepening their love for literature and the arts. We are incredibly proud of our dedicated staff, whose enthusiasm and organisation make such experiences possible.
