On Wednesday 20 March, students from Key Stage 4 competed in the final of the SATRO STEM Competition at Royal Holloway University.

After a tour of the campus the 24 teams were given their design brief; provided with no more than some string, an egg box, some cardboard, a battery, wires and light, they had to design and build a machine that could lift up to 20 Lego bricks 1metre from the floor onto a table, in under one minute.

Our students showed amazing teamwork and time management skills, especially as 2 members had to get changed halfway through so they could return to school and perform in the Spring Concert!

During judging, our team's design managed to lift the maximum 20 Lego bricks in 41 seconds, which was a remarkable achievement as many teams didn’t even manage to lift 1 block.  They not only won the Key Stage 4 competition, but managed to get the best score of the evening, even beating the competing 6th form teams.

It was a fantastic result and the judges commented on their amazing design and construction skills, as well as their positive attitude and politeness.  We will be back next year.

Our thanks to Mrs Cook for supporting the students to be part of this challenge, and very many congratulations to the Key Stage 4 students who represented our school so beautifully.
