Eco Society

The school’s Eco Society has been working on a number of projects this year to raise awareness of environmental issues. Thanks to a donation from the school caterers, Cucina, the society has purchased a succulent plant for each Tutor group and office in the school. Known for their ability to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen the plants, which retain water in their leaves and stems, are a sustainable choice for those concerned with climate change as they need very little water to thrive. Tutors will collect the plants  after school this Friday and they will be part of every Tutor room from next week.

Two additional plants have been bought, and will be looked after by the Tutor groups that win the weekly House quiz. The plants will be passed onto the winning Tutor group each time there is a quiz, so stakes are high to keep the plants alive!

We asked the society about the rationale behind this project and Year 12 student Hannah said, "By introducing plants to students and giving them the opportunity to celebrate their successes whilst contributing positively to the environment, it's the perfect way to raise awareness for the Eco Society. These plants will be rewarded to the winning Tutor of the House quiz each week, allowing an element of responsibility and achievement. We also hope that it will encourage further contributions during the quiz. Each Tutor group will also be provided with a succulent. Succulents and plants release oxygen during photosynthesis, increasing air quality in classrooms for students."

Goals for the Eco Society over the next 12 months include reducing the pollution emitted from vehicles around the school and encouraging visitors to turn off their vehicles when they stop; engine idling releases more exhaust fumes into the air than when a car is moving. The students are also supporting the transition from plastic water bottles being sold at Charters, to flavoured water stations in the Dining Hall in conjunction with our school caterers Cucina.

Our thanks to Longacres in Bagshot for discounting the cost of the succulents and for Mr Metson for leading the Eco Society meetings.

Students wishing to join this fantastic club are welcome to come along to H10 every Tuesday at second break, and join in the debate.
