National Careers Week runs from Monday 6 to Friday 10 March and we kicked off this Careers-related week by welcoming two speakers into the Year 7 assembly.

Evangeline left Charters in 2021 and is currently studying Modern Foreign Languages at the University of Reading. She explained that she is studying on a part-time basis as this is better for her mental health, and that she commutes to the university instead of living in halls of residence. Explaining that there is not just one way to access higher education was a really interesting fact for the school's youngest students to hear. Evangeline also reminded the year group that although life choices seem like a scary topic, each and every one of them is already making small decisions each day; from deciding what to eat for breakfast to who they chat to during breaks.

Paul then spoke to the students about his career path, from working in IT, then procurement and now in mergers and acquisitions. He explained that failures should not define us and that despite receiving poor A Level results, he now has a degree and a masters. He advised the students to 'reinvent every so often and keep learning' so that they can adapt to new situations.

Finally, Deputy Headteacher with responsibility for Personal Development, Mrs Henly, who is also the Careers Lead at Charters, explained to the Year 7 students that they didn't have to know what career path they wanted to follow just yet, and that they should use National Careers week as an opportunity to think about the things they enjoy doing and what interests them.

Most importantly students were told that they should be curious and believe in themselves, which the film below illustrates beautifully.
