Students in Year 9 were immersed in the vibrant sounds and culture of the Caribbean this week through a series of hands-on steel pan workshops. Delivered by the external company Inspireworks, the sessions introduced students to authentic instruments, helping them develop the instantly recognisable “sunny” steel pan sound while learning and performing a traditional piece of music originating from Trinidad.

Each Year 9 tutor group enjoyed a full hour of expert tuition. As well as learning to play the correct notes and rhythms, students explored the history of the steel pan, discovered how Caribbean rhythms differ from European musical traditions, and gained an appreciation of the cultural significance behind the music.

The workshops proved to be an engaging and enriching experience, combining practical music-making with a deeper understanding of global musical heritage. Our thanks to Mr Hoare for organising such a memorable musical experience for our students.
