This week, our Sixth Form Spanish students enjoyed an enriching and memorable supercurricular experience with a visit to the British Film Institute on London’s iconic Southbank.

The trip provided a fantastic opportunity for students to extend their learning well beyond the classroom, combining academic challenge with the excitement of spending the day in one of the world’s most vibrant and bustling cities. Travelling into London together, students were able to experience the energy of the capital while engaging more deeply with their A Level Spanish studies.

Race Night (8)

At the BFI, students took part in a specialist study day focused on the work of renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar. Through expert-led presentations, detailed scene analysis and an introduced screening of Volver, students explored key themes, cinematic style and cultural context, all closely aligned with the A Level specification. Much of the day was delivered in Spanish, offering valuable immersion and supporting students’ confidence with language and critical analysis.

Experiences such as this play an important role in broadening students’ academic horizons, helping them to see their subjects come alive and develop the independent thinking and cultural awareness essential for future study.

Our thanks to the Modern Foreign Languages Department, and in particular to Mrs Matthews, for organising this superb supercurricular activity. It looked like a thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring day for all involved.
