Specialist Staff Help Sixth Formers Thrive

Charters’ Outstanding Sixth Form is proud of its academic strength, but what truly sets it apart is the passion and expertise of the subject specialists who guide students every step of the way. This is a place where teaching goes beyond the curriculum, nurturing curiosity, confidence and ambition.
In the Science department, Miss Lawson believes Biology captures students’ imaginations because it answers big questions about how life works. “From molecules to ecosystems, Biology explains the world around us,” she says. Watching Year 12 students progress from the simple idea that white blood cells produce antibodies to an advanced understanding of the immune system is, for her, one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching. “Seeing that lightbulb moment, when their knowledge leaps forward, is why I love teaching this subject.”
Creativity also thrives in the Sixth Form. In Photography, Mr Holmes describes the subject as a unique mix of art, technology and storytelling. Students, he explains, are not just learning to take pictures, but to research, experiment, and communicate ideas. “It’s about finding your voice through images,” he explains. He recalls one student who discovered a passion for fashion photography: “They created a portfolio that looked straight out of a magazine, and now they’re working in creative direction for a sustainable brand. That’s the power of this subject — unlocking hidden talents.”
Mathematics is often seen as challenging, but for Miss Boxall, that challenge is what makes it exciting. “It keeps my brain alive,” she laughs, explaining how she constantly rethinks approaches to make abstract concepts clear to her students. What gives her the most pride is seeing their determination pay off. “In Year 13, they sit weekly practice exams. When the scores start climbing week on week, you know they’re really getting it — and that confidence carries them into their futures.”
In Product Design, Mr Bennie delights in the transformation he sees in students. “At first, many are hesitant problem-solvers. But as the course unfolds, they grow into confident, creative thinkers,” he says. For him, the magic lies in the moment a sketch becomes a working prototype with real purpose. “It’s not just about how something looks — it’s about who it helps, how it works, and how sustainable it can be. That’s when it clicks.”
Charters’ Sixth Form is academically rigorous, with minimum entry requirements in place to ensure every student is ready to meet the challenges of A Level study. This high standard creates an environment where subject specialists like Mis Lawson, Mr Holmes, Miss Boxall and Mr Bennie can help their students thrive — not just achieve.
Prospective students and families are warmly invited to see this inspiring environment for themselves at the Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday 16th October, from 5–8pm. It’s a chance to meet teachers, hear from students, and discover how Charters provides the springboard to higher education, ambitious careers and, most importantly, a lifelong love of learning.
At Charters Sixth Form, students don’t just study. They thrive.
