Year 10 Students Embrace Adventure and Leadership at Tyr Abad

Last week, a group of enthusiastic Year 10 students swapped their classrooms for the stunning wilds of Wales as they returned to the Tyr Abad Outdoor Education Centre for a memorable Leadership Week. Nestled in the heart of the Brecon Beacons, Tyr Abad provided the perfect backdrop for five days of challenge, discovery and personal growth.
This special opportunity followed on from the Leadership Days the students experienced in Year 9, during which staff identified individuals who had already shown leadership potential. The five-day residential course was designed to help these students develop key skills - communication, confidence and resilience—through the unique and rewarding experiences that only Outdoor Education can offer.
From the moment they arrived, students were immersed in a full programme of activities designed to test both their physical abilities and their problem-solving skills. Highlights of the week included raft building on the lake, where teamwork and quick thinking were essential, shelter construction in the forest, which called for creativity and collaboration, and a variety of puzzle-solving challenges that stretched their lateral thinking to the limit. The week drew to a close with students and staff showing off their dancing manoeuvrers!
Alongside these practical tasks, the week gave students the chance to build stronger friendships and to develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be a leader - skills that will serve them well both inside and outside of school.
Our thanks to Miss Male, Miss De’Ath and Dr Herbert, who accompanied the students throughout the week, offering guidance and encouragement.
Leadership Week at Tyr Abad proved to be more than just an outdoor adventure: it was a powerful experience that inspired students to step up, take initiative and discover new strengths in themselves. Their achievements are a credit to the Charters School community, and we look forward to seeing these young leaders put their new skills into action in the months ahead.
