Exploring the World of Construction Careers

Today, a group of our students had the fantastic opportunity to take part in an inspiring careers talk that opened their eyes to the vast and varied roles within the construction industry.

We were delighted to welcome Sophie and Claire from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), along with Laurence, Head of Developments at McMullen and Sons Ltd - a well-established brewing and hospitality company based in Hertfordshire. Together, they brought to life the idea that careers in construction go far beyond bricks and mortar.

Drawing on their own journeys - Sophie as a Product Owner and Claire as an HR Business Partner - our guests highlighted how careers rarely follow a straight line. Instead, they’re shaped by personality, passion, and a willingness to grow through experience and qualifications. Whether in Finance, Digital & Technology, Data, HR, Marketing, Policy, Governance, or Training, the construction sector offers something for everyone.

Students were encouraged to think about what energises them, what kind of environments they thrive in, and how the skills they’re building now can evolve into exciting and meaningful careers in the future.

Today’s workshop marks the beginning of an exciting journey. On Wednesday, students will take their learning one step further with a visit to the CIOB’s headquarters in Bracknell, where they’ll get a closer look at the day-to-day workings of this Royal Chartered body and explore how it supports and shapes the industry across the UK and beyond. There will then be a further workshop next week where the students will be encouraged to reflect on their trip.

We’d like to extend a sincere thank you to Sophie, Claire, and Laurence for taking the time to share their stories, insights, and enthusiasm with our students. Their warmth, honesty, and expertise brought the construction industry to life in new and unexpected ways, and we know our students left feeling curious, motivated, and eager to learn more.

We can’t wait for Wednesday’s visit and the opportunity for our students to continue building connections, confidence, and ambition.
