As part of our outstanding Sixth Form’s commitment to preparing students for “life after Charters,” a group of Year 12 students recently spent an exciting and inspiring day at the University of Portsmouth for a Sport and Exercise Science Workshop Taster Day.

The visit gave students a real taste of university life, while opening their eyes to a range of career pathways within sport — from biomechanics and physiology to nutrition, psychology, and even sport business management. Throughout the day, students immersed themselves in four interactive workshops that brought their BTEC and A Level studies to life in exciting and unexpected ways.

"How Can Race Walkers Walk So Fast?"

In this first workshop, students investigated the cardio-vascular, respiratory, and thermal responses to steady-state exercise — comparing their own data to that of elite race walkers, who can maintain a staggering 15 km/h over 20km. Special recognition goes to Ruby, who tackled the challenge with impressive stamina, managing to walk at 8 km/h before having to slow down — a moment that really highlighted just how extraordinary elite athletes are.

"How Many Hours Does it Take to Become an Expert?"

Here, students discovered how virtual and augmented reality are revolutionising training in elite sport. By simulating pressure environments and enhancing mental rehearsal, athletes can refine their decision-making and performance under stress — a fascinating dive into sports psychology and the science behind elite success.

"Squat Are You Doing?" — Using Biofeedback in Sport

This session offered students the chance to explore how state-of-the-art Motion Capture Systems and force plates are used to provide feedback that helps athletes train more effectively and move symmetrically. With some healthy competition, students tested who could squat with the best form and who had the highest jump — blending biomechanics with a bit of friendly fun.

Behind the Scenes of Sport Management

Rounding off the day, students stepped into the shoes of sports event managers, tackling the logistics, planning, and strategy needed to host successful sporting events. They worked in groups to design events aimed at different community demographics, gaining a newfound appreciation for the business side of the sports industry.

This enriching visit offered more than just academic insight — it gave our students a first-hand experience of university learning and a vivid glimpse into the many exciting paths a career in sport can offer. It was a perfect blend of learning, inspiration, and future planning — a testament to the strength of our Sixth Form’s post-18 provision.

Well done to all the students who took part, thank you to the University of Portsmouth for an unforgettable day of discovery and aspiration, and our thanks to Mr Cumner for leading this trip.
