Pride Month at Charters

June is Pride Month – a time to celebrate love, identity, and the vibrant diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community. At Charters School, we’re proud to stand together in support, awareness, and education. This week, students from our Pride Society have been leading the way with a series of powerful and thought-provoking assemblies.
Guided by Ms Hughes, members of Pride Soc delivered presentations that highlighted why Pride Month matters, what it means to be an ally, and how we can all foster a more inclusive environment. With confidence and compassion, they explored topics such as the importance of representation in media, the challenges of “coming out,” and the idea of chosen family — a theme beautifully illustrated by actor Ncuti Gatwa’s portrayal of the Doctor in Doctor Who.
One key message that resonated throughout the assemblies was that everyone deserves to feel seen, supported, and safe. The students reminded us that we don’t need to fully understand someone’s identity to show them respect — a sentiment captured in quotes like “Be the real you,” “Gay is not an insult,” and “Everyone and anyone can be an ally.”
The assemblies also encouraged curiosity and respectful dialogue, emphasising that while society often defaults to heterosexual assumptions, visibility and open conversations can help create a more understanding and accepting culture for everyone.
Charters students are encouraged to express themselves and support their peers — whether that’s through wearing optional pronoun badges, attending Pride Soc meetings (Wednesdays, 2nd break in DR2 – everyone welcome!), or simply standing up for kindness and equality.
As one student so beautifully put it:
“You don’t need to fully understand something to respect it.”
This Pride Month, and every month, let’s celebrate people’s differences and stand proudly together.
