Japan Club Students Make Sushi!

We are incredibly proud of our school's Japan Club, where students from all year groups come together to explore Japanese language, culture, and entertainment. This week, 17 enthusiastic members of the ECA (Extra-Curricular Activity) took part in a vibrant and educational sushi-making workshop, made possible through a fantastic collaboration with our school caterers, Cucina.
After thorough hand-washing, the group gathered to watch a live demonstration by Peter Butterworth, Senior Operations Manager at Impact Foods. Peter expertly guided the students through the art of sushi rolling, sharing tips and techniques for creating the iconic delicacy we all know and love.
The ingredients included Nori sheets – thin, dried seaweed – sushi rice, and a selection of fresh vegetables such as cucumber batons, spring onions, peppers, and carrots, with tuna available as an optional filling. Using traditional bamboo rolling mats, students carefully layered the ingredients onto the Nori before rolling and sealing them into perfect sushi rolls. Once cut into bite-sized pieces, each student's sushi was packed into takeaway boxes, accompanied by soy sauce, wasabi, sriracha mayo, and pickled ginger.
To make the experience even more special, Impact Foods surprised students with thoughtfully prepared goody bags, filled with store-cupboard essentials for making sushi at home – an inspiring takeaway for budding chefs!
Throughout the workshop, students engaged enthusiastically with the catering team, practising simple Japanese phrases and discussing elements of Japanese culture they’ve been studying. It was a wonderful sight to see learning come to life through such an interactive and delicious activity.
A heartfelt thank you to Peter Butterworth and the Impact Foods team for delivering such a hands-on, memorable workshop. Special thanks also go to Mrs. King and Mr. Greaves for their ongoing leadership and support of the Japan Club.
