Year 8 Scientists Return to Tyr Abad

This week, selected Year 8 students swapped the classroom for the countryside during an unforgettable trip to the Tyr Abad Centre for Outdoor Education in Wales. Set in acres of forest, the centre provided the perfect base for a week of hands-on scientific discovery, adventure and teamwork — all closely tied to the Year 8 Science curriculum.
Students explored Physics through axe throwing, climbing and canoeing — putting motion, force, and aerodynamics into real-world action. Chemistry came alive underground in the Porth yr Ogof caves, where they investigated weathering and erosion, and even visited a gold mine to study metal extraction. Biology fieldwork included canoe-based river studies, bug ecology, and rock pooling on the coast.
Evenings were just as engaging, with rocket building, stargazing under clear Welsh skies, and challenging science-based team activities.
More than just a trip, it was a week of discovery that brought science off the page and into the real world — leaving students inspired, curious, and a little muddy!
