Religious Studies and Statutory Religious Studies
RESULTS
Religious Studies students at Charters School are curious about questions that affect the human experience and are inspired by religious and non-religious responses to these. By engaging with a rich and diverse programme of study, based on religion and other world views locally and globally, they will develop a sophisticated understanding of how the world works and what it means to be human. In keeping with the Charters core values of unity, respect and excellence, they will engage with a curriculum that is ambitious, challenging and inclusive so they are empowered to take their places as global citizens in a diverse world.
This means:
- They will have a consistent diet of high-quality Religious Studies lessons.
- Students will get opportunities to develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally as they reflect on their own beliefs, being able to be discerning about the many attitudes and opinions they will encounter.
- They will gain knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews and use that knowledge to engage in informed and balanced debates.
- What is taught and learned in RE is grounded in what is known about religion and non-religion from academic study.
- RS lessons will stimulate students’ curiosity about, and interest in, both religious and non-religious worldviews and help students navigate the diverse and complex world around them.
- RS lessons will provide opportunities for students to reflect on the relationship between their personal worldviews and the content studied, equipping them to develop their own informed responses in the light of their learning.
- They will learn the required knowledge and skills through a Progression Curriculum – carefully sequenced so students are empowered to think at increasing levels of challenge and greater depth as their knowledge grow in sophistication and complexity.

COURSE OUTLINE
STATUTORY RELIGIOUS STUDIES
Students are taught Religious Studies once a fortnight at Key Stage 3 and all students are given the opportunity to follow an externally accredited course at both Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, (see above).
Supplementary to this, students in Year 10 are all given a dedicated programme of study focused on Religious Studies based on the guidance provided by SACRE.
In these sessions students analyse and interpret a wide range of religious, philosophical and ethical concepts in increasing depth. They investigate issues of diversity within and between religions and the ways in which religion and spirituality are expressed in philosophy, ethics, science and the arts. They expand and balance their evaluations of the impact of religions on individuals, communities and societies, locally, nationally and globally. They understand the importance of dialogue between and among different religions and beliefs. They gain a greater understanding of how religion and belief contribute to community cohesion, recognising the various perceptions people have regarding the roles of religion in the world.
In addition to this, students in Years 7-13 gain a wider insight into religious, philosophical and ethical concepts within Year group assemblies, school excursions across a variety of subjects and within the Personal Development Lesson.
