Students in Year 11 celebrated Epiphany in their French and Spanish lessons today with some delicious cakes.

In Spain, usually on 6 January, families gather together to eat a sweet treat called Roscón de Reyes - a circular cake filled with cream. If you slice into it and get a figurine of a king - you are a king for the day. If however, you get a bean, you have to pay for the cake!

Miss Dabbaj had baked the most beautiful Roscón de Reyes in which she had hidden a figurine of a 'king' - she had not included the bean so only a king would be crowned today and no-one would have to pay for the cake!  Students chose which piece of cake they would like in turn and Ryan was the lucky student who had the slice that included the 'king'.

Similarly, in the adjoining French class, Miss Stock had baked a traditional "Galette des Rois" - a tasty flaky pastry creation. Following the French tradition, the youngest student sat under the table and chose the order in which the others were served a slice of the galette.  Again a secret figurine had been hidden in the bake and the student who found the "fève" in their slice became king (le roi) for the remainder of the day. The students were delighted to try the cake and Toby and Charlie sat under the desks as they were the youngest students.  Nina and Dan found the "fèves" and were crowned kings - two very snazzy hats replacing crowns on this occasion.

it was fantastic to see the Year 11 students so engaged in their lessons and enjoying the Spanish and French traditions.  Thank you to Miss Dabbaj and Miss Stock for organising these wonderful lessons.
