NEWSLETTER -7 OCTOBER

HIGHLIGHTS

We have had over a thousand parents, carers and children touring the school this week as they decide upon the next steps as they move up from primary school.  On Tuesday through to Friday we had families being guided around the school by our Senior and Junior Prefect teams.  This has given the families an opportunity to go into lessons, walk around the grounds and experience a lesson change over!  The feedback from the families was excellent and that was all down to the prefects who were confident, informative and welcoming to our visits.

Staff have been nominating work for the Wall of Excellence this week, I have been amazed with the work that has been sent through showing such creativity and a thirst for developing new skills and knowledge.  We have had animations about blood cells, video’s on rocket designed, written pieces on disease as well as a song about Rhetoric in English.  They have all made me smile with joy this week.

While I was on a learning walk this week I was asked by Mrs Cook to drop into the school dining room where the chef was talking to Year 10 students about the importance of a balanced diet and what they means.  This is part of their ELC Science course, it was wonderful to see them being able to connect the theory to the practical by seeing how our team in the dining hall plan a balanced meal programme.

HELLO YELLOW

On Monday 10 October, Charters will be taking part in World Mental Health Day. We’re showing young people that they’re not alone with their mental health and raising vital funds for YoungMinds.

Raising money online last year was a real success and we are doing the same this year so you and your family can donate via a link to the school’s YoungMinds JustGiving page.

PLEASE CLICK TO DONATE

Please donate £1 or more so that we can raise money to support the YoungMinds charity. YoungMinds do amazing work to support young people, their parents/carers and their schools.

What can students wear?

Years 7-11

This is not a non-uniform day so instead we are asking students to raise awareness and money by wearing a yellow accessory.

Students in year 7-11 can wear for example:

  • A yellow tie
  • Yellow socks
  • A yellow hair scrunchie or band
  • A yellow badge
  • A yellow scarf

Please make sure that your child also has their normal full uniform on, including their blazer and school shoes.

Any students with PE on Monday can replace their school polo shirt with a yellow T-Shirt or sports shirt and can replace their white or blue PE socks with yellow socks.

Sixth Form (and staff!)

A yellow item of clothing such as a T-shirt, hoodie, hat, socks, scarf.

Sixth Form students can go ‘full on’ yellow or just wear a token badge or pair of socks but all clothes should still be dress code compliant

Shields

Wearing yellow in support of #HelloYellow will be a house competition. So all staff and students who are wearing yellow will gain a house point!

NOTICES

DROP OFF

Can we reminder people that they should only drop students off in the designated drop off area next to the tennis courts and then move away quickly.  The front car park and coach drop off zone are not areas that parents should be driving into or dropping off their children at - there are students getting off of buses in this area.  Keeping cars separate from students is a matter of safety.

PAPYRUS WORKSHOP

There are still spaces available on the Papyrus Suicide Prevention online workshop which takes place on Monday 10 October at 5pm.  Please book here to secure your space.  A zoom link will be sent to you before the meeting.

YEAR 8 BATTLEFIELDS TRIP

Students in Year 8 have the opportunity to go to Ypres in Belgium, and the Somme, in France in order to visit some of the battlefields of the First World War.

Information was sent to the relevant parents yesterday and can be found here.

POETRY CLUB

The Poetry Club got off to a great start this week as students from across all key stages got together to celebrate National Poetry Day on 6 October. Using Brian Bilston’s Autumn as inspiration, the group created their own seasonal poems by manipulating the physical shape of the words on the page.

Poetry Club is held fortnightly at second break on Week B Thursdays in M12. All are welcome!

POETRY COMPETITION

Calling all Year 7 students…

why not celebrate National Poetry Day this October by entering this competition?

You are invited to write an acrostic poem about your favourite plants and animals.

Email your poem to Mrs Phipps (l.Phipps@chartersschool.org.uk by 19 October 2022 to be in with a chance of winning £100 of books).

EXAMINATIONS SUMMER 2023

The Department for Education is running a consultation regarding examinations next year.  This consultation ends on 20 October 2022.  The following link contains the consultation document.  Once the consultations outcomes have been published we will let students and families know the outcomes.  We are aware that some schools have communicated what the changes will be, we feel it is more prudent to wait for the outcome of the consultation.

In the meantime, it is important that all students in Year 11 and Year 12 continued to focus on their learning in class and at home.   Year 11 have their core PPEs after half term week beginning 7 November and their non-core week beginning 28 November.  Year 13’s PPEs start W/B 9 January.
