All of Year 7 were invited, as part of their Citizenship course, to enter designs for a competition to build a sensory garden for the residents of St Christopher's Care Home . The competition was judged jointly by the residents of St Christopher's and Garry Mumford of Garden Solutions who commented on "the level of enthusiasm for gardening in the young people who took part, they were amazing!" The winning design was duly constructed and the students really enjoyed being involved in planting the garden and spending time with the residents. The project was hugely successful in meeting its aim to give the residents a pleasurable environment whilst creating a habitiat beneficial to wildlife and to build links between the school and the Home.
The project was considered to be of a high enough standard to be entered for the Dorothy Morley Conservation Award, which we won! This award was set up to commemorate Dorothy Morley, who was a keen conservationist. She believed that the environment we live in and the welfare of humanity were intrinsically linked and wished to pull communities together by developing their respect for and love for their surroundings. The award carries a prize of £1000 which students decided to split between St Christopher's and Charters School so that the work on the environment can be continued in both locations, and plans are in place to continue to build on the bonds formed between the Home and the School
Charters School would also like to thank the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England for their vision and encouragement.
