Careers Fair
We are delighted to say that today’s Careers Fair, held in the Main Hall, has been a great success with a host of major companies, universities and colleges in attendance. We have been particularly impressed with the wide range of post-18 opportunities available to our students. We would like to thank Mr Dhesi and Mrs Courage for the superb organisation of the event today.
National Apprenticeship Week – 6 to 10 February
Following on from the above, as part of National Apprenticeship Week, we have organised a special event for Year 12 students on Wednesday 8 February to raise awareness of apprenticeships. We have a guest speaker coming in from the Thames Valley Regional Network Apprenticeship Service who will explain all the different types of apprenticeships available. This will be followed by guest speakers from Logica (ICT), Ernst & Young (Financial Services) and Barclays Bank who will be talking to our students about the apprenticeship programmes that they offer.
During the week Charters will also be showing short films to students in Years 9 to 13 which explain exactly what apprenticeships are and the important role that they play.
If you would like to understand more about modern apprenticeships please see our web page.
Mufti Day - Thursday 9 February
Next Thursday, 9 February will be a non-school uniform mufti day and the money raised will go towards funding the Tirabad ‘New Futures’ Course. Each year a group of Charters Sixth Form students travels to our excellent residential centre in South Wales with a group of students with disabilities from Addington School, Reading. The trip has been running for many years now and it is always a wonderfully rewarding trip for all those involved.
All students are requested to bring in a minimum of £1 donation for the mufti day (before Thursday) which will be collected by the Sixth Form Senior Team and the Sixth Form students travelling on the New Futures trip. We sincerely hope that all students will support this outstanding programme and ensure that they pay their £1 in advance. Could we remind students that clothing should be appropriate for a school environment. It is also important that students bring in the correct school PE kit on Mufti Day for their usual PE lessons and remember their Smartcards for lunch!
Charters Quiz Night
We are holding our annual charity fundraising Quiz Night on Friday 2 March in the Main Hall at 7.30 pm. Please click here for further details and ticket applications. This is always a great evening, so do please come along and join us!
All money raised this year will be going to Mlimani Community School, Arusha, Tanzania. This is a school which two of our staff, Mr and Mrs Metson, did volunteer work in for three weeks last summer. It is currently comprised of two very basic classrooms with no electricity or running water. The pupils are aged between 3 and 10 and the school was started by a teacher who works in government schools where classes can be as large as 80 students! He started this project from scratch and any money would be spent on helping the local students and their families through education and community work. As a school in a slum area there is very little government funding so any donations are gratefully received.
Having the Chop for Charity
Eleanor Fettes (9E) and Isobel Clements (9T) are having 7 inches of hair cut off on 13 February to raise money for ‘My Little Princess’ charity. The charity make wigs for children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment or other illnesses such as alopecia. If you would like to make a donation to this worthy cause, Eleanor has set up a Just Giving page http://www.justgiving.com/Eleanor-Fettes and if students wish to make a contribution, both girls have sponsor forms.
Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY)
CRY’s mission is to identify young people who are at risk from sudden cardiac death. Sudden Death Syndrome is an umbrella term used for the many different types of cardiac arrest in young people. These conditions include the thickening or abnormal structure of the heart and irregularities of the impulses that upset the natural rhythm of the heart. Sporty youngsters stress their heart the most. If they have an underlying cardiac abnormality, they are more likely to be at risk. It is important to stress that exercise is NOT bad for you and sport itself does not lead to cardiac arrest, but it can act as a trigger for a young person to die suddenly by exacerbating an undetected condition.
CRY are running regular cardiac testing clinics that are available free of charge to any person in the south east of England who was born in 1995. The venue for these clinics is the CRY Centre for Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions and Sports Cardiology, at St. George's Hospital in Tooting, London (click for map). The focus on this particular age group is because post-puberty is the earliest age that proactive screening is viable. If you are interested in this screening, further information is available at the CRY website, click here.
