What is Sociology A level about?

The students studying this course will acquire essential knowledge and understanding of central aspects of sociological thought and methods, together with being able to apply a range of skills. It allows A level students to study aspects of the British society and consider and reflect on themes central to our society. Furthermore, at A2, other societies are considered.

 

Is this course for me?

Good communications skills are needed with at least a C grade in GCSE English to be considered for the course; an enthusiastic interest in current affairs using media knowledge; a basic interest in the Humanities subjects and general motivation.

  

What else do I need to know?

There is no coursework!

A01 – Knowledge and Understanding

A02 – Application, Interpretation and evaluation.

Unit Assesement

(all units are examined at the end of the course)

AS Unit 1:  SCLY1 –Families and Households- relating to social structure and demographic change; changing patterns of family structures and households; why change has occurred; and the change of status of children. 40% at AS and 20% at A2

(A01- 50% - A02 – 50%)

AS Unit 2: SCLY2 –Education and the application of sociological methods ; the role and purpose of education in contemporary society; why certain children achieve whilst others struggle and relate this problem to the major factors of class, gender and ethnicity; relationships and processes in schools; and educational policies. 

60% at AS and 30% at A2

(A01 – 48%- A02 – 52%)

A2 Unit 3: SCLY3 –Global Development – theories of development, underdevelopment and global inequality; globalisation and its influence on societies; the role of transnational corporations, development and war and conflict; and relationships of employment, health and gender. 20% of the total A level (A01 – 40% - A02- 60%)
A2 Unit 4: SCLY4 –Crime and Deviance and the connections between sociological methods and theories; the social distribution of crime relating to age, class, gender, ethnicity and location; globalisation and crime in contemporary society such as green crime and human rights; crime and the judicial system; and suicide. 30% of the total A level (A01- 43% - A02 – 57%)
