What is the Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma  in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre)

The BTEC National Award in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) is equivalent to one GCE A level. It will give you an understanding of the Performing Arts with a specific focus on the essential skills, techniques and disciplines needed for a career in musical theatre. The qualification provides you with an insight into the employment opportaunities available, helping you to choose a career or move on to further study. This course is available at the equivalent of AS level (1 year) and A2 Level (2 years.)

 

How is this course structured?

Year 1 – BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) = Equivalent of 1 AS Level

Year 2 – BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) = Equivalent of 1 A2 Level

Unit Content and Assessment

BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre)

This course requires the students to complete 3 units over the 1 year period.

The course is designed to be adaptable to your interests, abilities and aspirations: It consists of a core unit (Musical Theatre Performance) and two further units selected to suit you. This provides a total of 180 guided learning hours. The course is assessed using pass, merit, distinction criteria, each of which carry a points weighting. At the end of the course the points are added up, or carried over if you wish to take the full subsidiary diploma. For those going to university, the points are then converted to UCAS points. You can also convert the points into AS equivalent grades.

Pass = E at AS Level
Merit = C at AS Level
Distinction = A at AS Level

 

Unit 14:  Musical Theatre Performance—60 hours

Musical Theatre is an exciting and popular art form that combines acting, singing, dancing and movement. You will be introduced to some landmark works in order to recognise the features of different musicals. As well as being able to act, you are required to take part in dance routines and have the ability to sing. You will rehearse and perform a role within a Musical Theatre performance in order to gain the experience of combining acting, singing and dancing abilities and skills.            

Two further units—120 hours

These could focus on any three of the following depending on the interest of the group: Applying Acting Styles, Acting Auditions, The Healthy Performer, Singing Skills for Actors and Dancers , Choreographing Dances or Principles of Acting.

 

BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre)

This course requires the students to complete a further 3 units over the 2nd year period.

The course is again designed to be adaptable to your interests, abilities and aspirations: It consists of a core unit (Performing to an Audience) and two further units selected to suit you. This provides a total of 180 guided learning hours. The course is assessed using pass, merit, distinction criteria, each of which carry a points weighting. At the end of the course the points are added up. For those going to university, the points are then converted to UCAS points. You can also convert the points into A Level equivalent grades.

Pass = E at A2 Level
Merit = C at A2 Level
Distinction = A at A2 Level


 

Unit 7 – Performing to an Audience – 60 Hours

This unit gives the learner the opportunity to undertake, prepare and perform a role as part of a performing arts company presenting work to an audience. You will focus on your individual strengths in a performance role within the context of a full-scale theatrical performance. You will gain realistic experience of carrying out a defined performance role or roles, transferring and applying relevant performance skills.


 

Two further units – 120 Hours

As with the BTEC Certificate, the Subsidiary Diploma can be created with you in mind by selecting two units. These could focus on any three of the following depending on the interest of the group: Developing Physical Theatre, Auditions for Actors, Dance performance, Singing Skills for Actors and Dancers, Variety Performance, Choreographing Dances or Principles of Acting.


 

Is this course for me?

This is definitely the course for you if you have already followed the BTEC First Certificate in Performing Arts (Acting) and you have a real passion for Musical Theatre combining your acting skills with the opportunity to extend your skills in movement and singing.

 

What else do I need to know?

You will  need to realise the importance of rehearsals after school to ensure you meet the course requirements. You will also be expected to see a wide variety of performance work.

Finally the BTEC is a coursework only subject, there are no exams involved. This does, however, mean that you will need to spend a vast amount of time completing work to a high standard. Organisation skills are essential to balance and  manage your time between the different units.

 

Where could it lead?

With the international recognition of BTEC courses such as this, you can progress straight into employment. If successful there are a wide range of prospective careers that you can explore, for example: choreographer, entertainer or singer. This award has the equivalence of one GCE A level, and it is possible for you to progress further into higher education , as successful BTEC Level 3 qualifications give UCAS points for University applications.
