Modern Language Faculty

   Curriculum Leader: Mrs Marianne Mathews

What we aim to achieve with students

The MFL Faculty offers stimulating and enjoyable courses from Years 7-9 to enable pupils to understand, speak, read and write basic French and Spanish.  This generates enthusiasm and interest for the subject and enables pupils to communicate at a basic, personal level with native speakers before opting for GCSE French and/or Spanish in Years 10-11.  There are AS and A2 courses for those who wish to further their studies and/or use their foreign language(s) at college or university or in future employment.  Pupils are taught within the National Curriculum framework and we value the diversity of individual talents and skills. We make maximum use of pupils' natural gifts and offer them every opportunity to develop these and experience success.

The courses we run

KS3: Most pupils have the opportunity to study French and Spanish simultaneously, promoting a linguistic awareness of the study of foreign languages and culture in an enjoyable and relevant way, providing a foundation for further study where appropriate. Y8-Y9 pupils follow the AQA FCSE course.

KS4: AQA GCSE Results at GCSE are consistently above the national average. We have maintained high numbers (70-75%) of KS4 pupils studying one or more languages to GCSE. Pupils are set in option blocks for French and Spanish.

KS5: Edexcel AS/A2  Very good results at AS and A2. The AL courses further develop fluency and accuracy enabling many of our students to continue language learning to a higher level at university.
