International Inspirations

The British Council and the Youth Sport Trust have established a new programme called ‘International Inspirations’, which aims to ‘reach young people all around the world and connect them to the inspirational power of the 2012 Olympic Games so they are inspired to choose sport.’ The programme aims to use the power of sport to transform the lives of millions of children of all abilities, in schools and communities across the world, particularly in developing countries, through the power of high quality and inclusive physical education. It has been successfully piloted in several countries, and has recently started to develop activities in South Africa.

Charters has been partnered with Holy Family Combined School, a rural school about four hours drive from Johannesburg, situated right on the edge of a National Park and near Sun City. It has 900 pupils ranging in age from 4 - 16 years and 36 teachers, meaning that the average class size is about 45! School starts at 7am and finishes at 2pm. A lot of pupils have to walk some distance and the majority have to do chores before leaving for school. So many of them are up at 4.30am!

Staff from Holy Family Combined School have visited Charters to see how we do things here and our staff have been out there to to help them develop their sport. Future visits are planned to build on the foundations which have been laid.
