What is Health and Social Care A level about?

Health and Social Care is a subject that links well with biology, psychology and sociology. It is an ideal subject for students considering careers in teaching, nursing, midwifery and social work.It gives students the ability to interact with the health, social care and early-years sectors, allowing students the opportunity to experience the work environment through learning. It gives students the ability to interact with the health, social care and early-years sectors, allowing students the opportunity to experience the work environment through learning.

 
Is this course for me?

Health and Social Care is suitable for all abilities but students who prefer and do well at coursework will enjoy active learning styles such as discussion, giving presentations, interviewing people. It is also a good subject for students who like to meet people as they are expected to make contact with work settings, interview people, and review this in their portfolios.  

  

What else do I need to know?

Students will need to be well motivated to meet portfolio deadlines. They will be asked to complete a communication interaction in a health, early years or care setting of their own choice. A small health promotion campaign will also be  carried out by the students.

 

Where could it lead?

Health and Social Care ‘A’ level can lead to careers in nursing, midwifery, health visiting and speech therapy. Also careers working with children such as nursery education, teaching and social work.

 
How is this course structured?

There are two portfolio units and one assessed unit in each year.

AS Unit 1:  Promoting Quality Care.

Students will gain an understanding of the need for high quality care for individuals who are incapable of looking after themselves.

AS Unit 2:  Communication in Care Settings.

Students will produce their portfolio work based on different types of communication and the skills required for a successful communication interaction. Students will need to carry out a short communication interaction in a health, social care or early year’s environment.

AS Unit 3:  Promoting Good Health.

Students portfolio will investigate the ways in which ill health can be prevented and the social factors which influence health and well being. The students will be asked to carry out a small health campaign on their chosen area of health.

A2 Unit 4:  Anatomy and Physiology.

Students will study six body systems.They will look at their structure, functions, and causes of dysfunctions, the effects of the dysfunctions and how they are diagnosed and treated.

A2 Unit 5:  Care Practice and Provision.

Student’s portfolio work will investigate the provision of health, social care and early year’s services in their local area.

A2 Unit 6:  Child Development.

The students will look at the various stages of development, factors that influence development and the norms of development. Students will also investigate how play effects development and be asked to plan and make a learning aid for a child between 0 and 8 years old.
