What is Geology A level about?
Geology is an exciting branch of science concerned with the structure, evolution and dynamics of the Earth. Understanding the geological processes of the past is now more relevant than ever, due to continuing concern for the planet’s climate and the increasing demand for natural resources. The A level geology course covers many aspects of the history of the Earth including the record of organic evolution, and changes in the Earth’s climate. Geology is a subject that brings together all branches of science, and demonstrates their relevance to modern society and demonstrates their relevance to modern society.
Is this course for me?
Students are required to have at least GCSE Grade C in all Sciences and at least a Grade C in Mathematics before starting the course. Geology is a demanding course and students without these desired grades will find the work very challenging. No previous knowledge of geology is required - the specification builds on science GCSE courses.
Geography GCSE is not essential.
What else do I need to know?
An important part of geology is the fieldwork. Many aspects of geology fall into place when seen in the correct context. Students will also be expected to gain the necessary skills via regular practical sessions, lectures and discussions. To be successful students will need to carry out extensive background reading and research into topics covered in lessons.
Where could it lead?
A Level geology is an acceptable subject for entry to a wide range of university degree courses, including medicine, and is often seen as an interesting choice. There is a shortage of graduate geologists.
Students going on to study geology at degree level and beyond can expect to spend a good deal of time in the field and laboratory. Career opportunities exist not only in related fields, but in positions throughout management and industry, where their logical and clear thinking approach to problem-solving is appreciated.
