What is Applied Business Single A level about?

Applied Business is a broad-based qualification that provides the opportunity for students to explore the world of business in a highly practical way.  By adopting an investigative approach, students develop a range of skills while discovering the problems and opportunities faced by businesses.  Since the emphasis is on realistic business contexts, students develop an understanding of how various business functions such as marketing, finance, human and physical resources work together, as part of a cohesive business.  The aim of the AS units is to encourage investigation, and to support a highly active, student-centred approach.  The A2 units require a decision-making approach, encouraging students to consider management decisions and their impact on business.

Is this course for me?

These courses are highly interactive with students taking on considerable responsibility for their own learning.  They will develop research and analytical skills that will enable them to achieve to the full limits of their potential. This course will suit learners with real strengths in coursework as well as those who seek to add a "vocational" element to their studies.

What else do I need to know?

The department will try to ensure that students have opportunities to visit and study Businesses in the UK to gain detailed evidence and information on a variety of Industries. There is also a potential opportunity to visit European city and study some European business issues.

What do other students say?

“a diverse and hands on approach to studying all aspects of business. There is a lot of independence and self management of work and time which has helped to develop confidence.”  “the fact that there is only one exam and mainly coursework give you the chance to really work on improving your grade through out the course”.

Where could it lead?

The qualification gives students a wide choice of progression options into higher education, training or relevant employment in the business sector. This course qualifies for UCAS points and is a good base for all Business Management related degrees. It is also a base for full time employment in many lines of business and can compliment many other vocations.
