Year 7 pupils have been learning the basic principles of West African drumming with visiting professional Mike Simpson of Inspire Works.  Using djembe drums, pupils learned a traditional piece aurally as practiced in West Africa, creating opportunities for improvisation, solos, response to aural cues and development in ensemble playing.  It was an exciting experience for pupils who enjoyed playing on authentic instruments and learning more about West African music and culture.
